Solar energy is the radiant energy that is emitted by the sun, made up of both light and heat. According to Energy.gov, solar energy is the most abundant energy resource on Earth. Our planet has 173,000 terawatts of solar energy striking it continuously. That is more than 10,000 times the world's total energy use.

Solar energy is more abundant than any other form of energy resource on Earth. We could, potentially, one day run out of coal, or oil, but we will never run out of the energy that comes from the sun. It is the ultimate renewable energy resource. It is also a sustainable resource. We will never have to grow more solar energy, or mine for more of it. It simply comes from the Sun to the Earth.

It is also a very &qout;green&qout; form of energy. It is a clean form of energy that does not produce any unwanted or dangerous waste products in the process of generating electricity. It does not contribute to air pollution, either. Unlike some other forms of energy, solar energy does not release carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, or mercury into the atmosphere or ground. Solar energy also does not contribute to global warming, acid rain, or smog.

We call the large, glowing, ball of gas that we see in the sky every day the Sun. Technically, it is a star. It is the largest star in our galaxy, the Milky Way galaxy. The sun gives off both light and heat. It has been described as being similar to a giant nuclear reactor. It fuses, or burns, hydrogen into helium. When the hydrogen combines to form helium, it gives off energy and radiation. Fusion is an extremely efficient way to convert mass into energy.

Solar energy is also called radiant energy or electromagnetic energy. The phrase &qout;radiant energy&qout; can sound a bit scary, because people confuse it with nuclear radiation. The two are not the same. Technically, all light is a form of radiant energy. Think of it like the rays of the sun shining on the Earth. Electromagnetic energy is made up of two fields: electrical and magnetic.

Solar energy is used to power and heat people's homes. In order for this to work, a consumer must place solar panels upon their roof. The solar panels collect the sunlight and convert it into electricity. Your home uses electricity as the form of energy that powers your appliances and electronics. Electricity is also used to heat your home. Solar power cannot be directly substituted for electricity. Instead, solar power is converted to electricity so consumers can make use of it.

Solar energy itself is free. However, in order to use it, a consumer will need to spend some money for the solar panels that are required to convert solar energy into electricity. Over time, the initial investment will be &qout;paid back&qout; to the consumer in the form of a lower electric bill. Instead of using only electricity, a consumer can use solar energy and somewhat less electricity every month.
